Upgrading an older home to a smart home in Singapore

Updated

Not every smart home starts with a new build. How we upgrade older HDB flats, older condominiums and landed houses without a renovation, one area at a time.

Most homes in Singapore are not new. They have wiring that was never planned for smart switches, walls that block Wi-Fi and aircon older than the apps that control it. None of that rules out a smart home. It just changes the order of the work: survey first, then choose devices that fit what is already there.

What is different in an older home

  • Switch boxes. Many have no neutral wire, which affects which smart switches can be used.
  • Wiring and distribution board. Their condition decides whether anything should be dealt with before devices go in. That judgement is for a licensed electrical worker.
  • Wi-Fi. Thick concrete and brick walls, metal doors and lift cores weaken the signal.
  • Aircon and doors. Older units use infrared remotes, and older doors suit retrofit locks.

How an upgrade usually goes

  1. A wiring and network survey of what you have.
  2. A short plan that says what to do first, what to leave and what needs more work.
  3. One area first, often the living room or the lights and aircon you use daily.
  4. Extend once the household has lived with it for a few weeks.

What avoids opening walls

  • Retrofit switch modules and no-neutral smart switches.
  • Battery sensors for doors, windows, motion and leaks.
  • Infrared controllers for split aircon.
  • Clip-on curtain robots and retrofit door locks.
  • Physical switches that keep working, so nobody is left behind.

Common questions

Does my older home need to be rewired?

Usually not. Retrofit options work with existing wiring. A licensed electrical worker can tell you whether your wiring needs attention first.

Can I upgrade in stages?

Yes, and it is usually the best way. Start with one area, then extend as you learn what you use.

Will it work with the devices I already own?

Very often, yes. Most popular brands integrate directly, and a few work only through a cloud account. We tell you which is which before you spend anything more.
