Smart home upgrades for HDB resale and existing flats
Updated
Existing flats can be upgraded without tearing up walls. How we survey what your wiring supports, which retrofit options fit, and how to roll it out one area at a time.
Most HDB flats were not built for smart switches, but most can still be upgraded. The trick is to start from what your wiring actually supports, instead of buying devices and hoping. We survey first, then pick devices that fit, and you can start with one area and extend later.
How an upgrade usually goes
- A wiring and network survey. Which switch boxes have a neutral wire, where the router sits, which rooms struggle with Wi-Fi.
- A short plan. What to automate first, which devices fit, and what to leave as it is.
- A first area. Often the living room, or the lights and aircon you use daily. Live with it, then extend.
Options that avoid opening the walls
- Retrofit switch modules behind existing switches.
- No-neutral smart switches for boxes without a neutral wire. They have trade-offs, which we explain before you buy.
- Battery sensors for doors, windows and motion.
- IR controllers for split aircon, with a temperature sensor to check the real room.
- Physical switches always keep working, so family members who never install an app are not left out.
Common questions
Do I need to hack my walls?
Usually not. Retrofit switch modules, no-neutral switches and battery sensors work with existing wiring. Planning it into a renovation is cheaper and cleaner, but it is not a prerequisite.
Can I keep the devices I already bought?
Very often, yes. Most popular brands integrate directly, and a few work only through a cloud account. We tell you which is which before you spend anything more.
What happens when the internet goes down?
The core keeps working. Automations, wall switches, sensors and local dashboards run on the controller in your home. Only remote access and cloud-only devices pause until the connection returns.
