Smart lighting and scenes for Singapore homes

Updated

Warm and dim in the evening, bright for cleaning, and no hunting for the right app at midnight. How we choose switches, dimmers and bulbs circuit by circuit.

Good smart lighting is mostly about what happens when nobody is thinking about it: the hallway light that is dim at night, the living room that changes with the evening, the switch by the bed that still does what you expect. We choose the hardware circuit by circuit, because the right answer for a bedroom is rarely the right answer for a kitchen.

How we choose

  • Smart switches when you want the wall switch to stay the main control and the light to remain usable by anyone.
  • Dimmers for living and dining areas where mood matters. Not every light or driver dims well, so we check the fitting first.
  • Smart bulbs where a switch cannot be changed, or for colour and tunable white in a lamp. A bulb only works while its switch stays on, which needs care.
  • No-neutral options for older HDB wiring where a switch box has no neutral wire. See our guide to smart switches without a neutral.

Scenes that get used

  • Evening: warmer and dimmer once the sun goes down.
  • Cleaning: everything bright with one press.
  • Night path: a low light for the walk to the bathroom.
  • Leaving: everything off from the front door.

A scene is only worth building if someone will actually press it, so we start from how your household moves through the day.

Common questions

Will the wall switches still work?

Yes. Physical switches always keep working, so family members and guests who never install an app can still turn on a light.

Do I need to rewire to get smart lighting?

Usually not. Retrofit switch modules, no-neutral switches and bulbs work with existing wiring. Wiring in walls and switch boxes should be done by a licensed electrician.

Does it work when the internet is down?

On a local system, yes. Switches, scenes and sensors run on the controller in your home. Only remote access and cloud-only devices pause.
